Breathwork can have a profound impact on your well-being and your life.

As a former corporate executive and now entrepreneur I get it, life can be hectic. Between work, family, and everything in between, it can be hard to find time to relax and recharge. But the good news is, you don’t need to carve out hours in your schedule to experience the benefits of breathwork. This simple yet powerful practice can be done in just a few minutes a day and can have a profound impact on your physical, mental and emotional well-being.

Breathwork came to me about 4 years ago in a yoga retreat. At first, I thought it was a mindfulness technique, with similar benefits. And it can be. But gosh, how little did I know.

Breathwork can reduce stress and anxiety.

One of the main benefits of breathwork for busy ones (like you) is its ability to reduce stress and anxiety. When we’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed out, our bodies naturally go into “fight or flight” mode, which is characterised by increased heart rate, rapid breathing, and elevated levels of stress hormones. But with breathwork, we can activate the relaxation response of our nervous system, which is characterised by slower breathing, lower heart rate, normal digestion, and relaxed muscles. By focusing on the breath and using specific breathing techniques, we can calm the mind and body and bring a sense of peace and tranquillity to our busy lives.

Breathwork can help you to improve your sleep.

In addition to its stress-reducing benefits, breathwork can also help you to improve your sleep. If you’re having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, practising specific breathing techniques before bed can help to relax the mind and body, making it easier to drift off into a restful slumber.

Breathwork can boost your energy and improve focus and concentration.

But it’s not just about relaxation. Breathwork can also boost energy and improve focus and concentration. If you’re feeling burnt out or struggling to stay on top of your workload, taking just a few minutes to focus on your breath can help to give you a much-needed energy boost and improve your ability to stay focused and productive.

My feel-good morning practice

Incorporating breathwork into your daily life can be as easy as taking a few deep breaths whenever you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed. Or, set aside just a few minutes a day for a dedicated practice. For almost a year, I did my daily breathwork practice on the train to work.

My favourite way to start the day is to practice breathwork followed by some journaling.

It’s just such a different experience if you start your day feeling balanced and with intention.
